Know where your data is?

Written by Condon Associates on 9 May 2011

Recently there has been a significant level of publicity about a major entertainment company that discovered that there had been a significant level of hacking into its databases that exposed the personal details of many of its current and former customers.

Our IT advisors indicated that a large part of this exposure came from having data literally stored on the net.

Defending oneself from claims for not adequately protecting customer information can be an expensive sport, particularly in the SME market. Consequently it is imperative that the owners of small to medium businesses have a thorough handle on where their data is, how it is managed and who has access to it, as well as a thorough understanding of the security measures that they have in place. A mere flick to the IT man and a statement that it’s under control will not stop a legal action.

Having the situation under control is far better that fighting the fire later. Not only could the legal and rectification costs spell disaster for the business but the publicity that could emerge will no doubt be used by your competitors to keep your business in the doldrums.

Remember, Control your business, don’t have your business control you.
