Interesting employment

Written by Condon Associates on 28 April 2011

The current mood of the recruitment industry is interesting to note.

Publicly the press is full of rejoicing around our current low level of unemployment, which should not be directly compared to figures of 20 years ago because the underlying calculation is radically different, however that is another story.

What is interesting is that the true sentiment is that the market is not as strong as it was at the beginning of the year and that there is an underlying tone of concern as there still remains an underlying lack of confidence in the future, be it a Middle east issue, a US recovery issue, a natural disaster issue or something else.  Consequently, many are poised to move in either direction.

This was recently reaffirmed by conversations I had with people over from the US who expressed that many there were merely waiting for the second wave.

The observation that must be made is that overconfidence in a misguided belief that will bring you undone.  A long while ago I remember a senior partner from one of the then Big 5 that said, “There is not a company on this planet big enough to bring this firm down,” how wrong he was!
