Every now and again a pearler turns up on the internet that just goes to prove that some things are never learnt. The following was received this week:
“The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest [WE] become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.”
Some could easily say these words were uttered in recent times, but if you correctly replace the word WE with Rome, its original author becomes a little more obvious…the author?
Cicero, and the year?
55 BC.
Interesting thought no?
